Australian family raffles off their island paradise Kosrae in Micronesia for $49 per ticket.

Most people would think of a good raffle prize as something like a bottle of decent spirits or perhaps a free trip to a spa. But an Australian family is giving everyone in the world the chance to win an island paradise for the modest price of just $49, the cost of a ticket in their own raffle to become the owner of the holiday resort they have built up on the Pacific island of Kosrae.
Describing their initiative as a “world-first island giveaway”, Doug and Sally Beitz say they are offering “the ultimate slice of paradise” to the lucky winner in a draw to be held on July 26.
“If you’re discontented with your life, you’re looking for something new, you want to be adventurous, take a shot”, Mr Beitz told Australia’s Channel 9 news programme earlier this month.
Doug and Sally Beitz moved to the sparsely inhabited island in Micronesia 24 years ago and founded the Nautilus resort, which, as well as its own private beach and scuba diving operation, has 16 air-conditioned rooms for beach lovers or tourists who want to explore the tropical island or snorkel in its crystalline waters.
Also thrown in is the family’s four-bedroom home, a pair of smaller apartments, a restaurant and various vehicles for getting around the island.
“We’ve had our time in the sun and enjoyed a career most people would never even dare dream about, but our current goal now is to become professional grandparents”; said Mr Beitz.
The couple said that they were attracted to the island’s white, sandy beaches and coral reefs after seeing a TV documentary in 1991. “A few weeks later I randomly picked up a magazine in a doctor’s waiting room and saw an article about the business opportunities in Micronesia. It seemed like it was meant to be,” said Mr Beitz.
But what will become of their investment if only a few people buy tickets? “We’re crazy but we’re not silly”, said Mr Beitz, explaining that the top prize of the resort will only be given out if 50,000 tickets are sold. Under that number, first prize will be half of the ticket money spent.
