Misool Foundation – Protecting the World’s Richest Reefs

RAJA AMPAT, INDONESIA

The Misool Foundation is an amazing conservation project in Misool. Misool is an area in the south of Raja Ampat. It is an archipelago of uninhabited islands in the heart of the coral triangle at the epicentre of marine biodiversity.

Misool Foundation protects a marine reserve which is an area of 300,000 acres where shark and rays are fully protected and there is a total ban on fishing. Reefs and marine life are guarded by local ranger patrols who are defending their own waters. The project engages local communities and empowers marine stewards.

Misool Foundation’s rangers have already expelled the illegal poachers with astounding results – a 250% increase in fish biomass in just 6 years, 25 times more sharks and a 600% biomass recovery on key sites.

Misool Foundation (called Yayasan Misool Baseftin in Indonesian) is the registered charity arm of the private island resort, Misool. The organisation has a proven track record of delivering measurable conservation results in some of the most remote and challenging locations in the world.

In our home base in Raja Ampat, our joint mission is to safeguard the most biodiverse reefs on Earth through the empowerment of local communities, providing a structure by which they are able to reclaim their traditional tenureship of reefs. The Foundation maintains a broad approach to conservation, combining environmental, social, and educational elements.

At the core of our operation is the belief that sustainable tourism and community-based conservation are mutually beneficial. We seek to demonstrate to our local hosts, government, guests, and ourselves that sustainable tourism can provide a better life than logging, mining, or overfishing.

Misool Foundation is now expanding its mission to address pressing conservation issues across Indonesia, by developing programs and campaigns focused on safeguarding threatened species and important marine habitats.
